Agenda / Minutes

I. Welcome

Roll Call: introductions by participants

II. Business (old/new)
a. Review/Approval of minutes
Ann Lumm motioned to accept the minutes as written.
Sandy Israel seconded the motion.
Unanimous vote to approve minutes.

b. Secretary Position still Open...

III. Share & Solve (continuing this popular agenda item to allow members to ask questions, brainstorm/share solutions, and share new technology discoveries)
Anyone have something to share today or next time?

a. Google Squared - Nan Williams
http://www.google.com/squared
Nan shared this tool that takes information from different sites and creates a "square" layout (spreadsheet-like) of the information for easy reading and comparison.
b. New Maricopa County TIS: Jennifer Lane jlane@schools.maricopa.gov
c. IDEAL Courses start January 20, 2010:

Among the IDEAL course offerings is an Online Facilitator Training Course. If districts/schools want to host their own classes on IDEAL, someone will need to be trained. If the trainer or district personnel have taken Teacherline or ASSET facilitator training, they will not need to take the IDEAL course.

d. K12 Online Conference is officially over for 2009, but all of the presentations are posted and available for viewing any time/any place and would be fantastic resources for district PD offerings for teachers. You can view all of them here:
http://wiki.k12onlineconference.org/home/for-participants/2009-schedule
Beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 8:00pmEST (6:00-7:00pm AZ time), Susan van Gelder is hosting K12 Online Conference Echo LAN parties on EdTechTalk where you can view selected presentations and interact with the presenter via chat. http://edtechtalk.com/studio
Peggy also answered the question about what type of headset she uses. It is an excellent inexpensive Logitech headset.

e. AzTEA's Top 10 iGems (internet gems) for 2009: http://www.aztea.org/Top10
f. A couple of articles that Sandy would like to share with us:

First article is "Bloom's Taxonomy, Bloom's Digitally"; second is "Whiteboard's Impact on Teaching seen as Uneven". The second article's main idea is that it's not about the interactive whiteboard; it's about the teaching.

IV. Wow Factor – PD Moment:

Glogster - Ann Lumm
If you are listening/watching the recorded session, Ann's presentation is starts at time: 27:00 and ends at 45:00 (18 minutes long).
Another site Ann shared was www.wall wisher.com - excellent virtual way to post ideas, comments or questions.

Some great follow-up resources on Glogster and GlogsterEDU are available here. We had a presentation by the Glogster creator, Jim Dachos, on Classroom 2.0 LIVE, and this link includes the recorded presentation and lots of links with examples of Glogsters created by teachers and students. Volunteer for next time? Would anyone be interested in providing us with a short presentation for Professional Development at the next or a future meeting?

V. Special Interest Topics:
a. Ruben - Update on Wikispace? No update at this time.
b. Anyone else have a tech initiative to share today or at another meeting? None at this time.

VI. Westside Workshops: Ann Lumm, Chair
a. Currently looking for location ideas for holding workshops: Cartwright, Alhambra and Elluminate were suggestions.
b. The Digital Nation Workshop still is waiting to be scheduled.
c. In an effort to get workshops scheduled in February and March, different topics were discussed and possible dates and locations. Two workshops have been scheduled:
1) Thursday, February 18 from 4:30 - 6 at Alhambra School District, Sandra Israel will present "Brain Rules and Technology". Hopefully we will be able to record or stream the session with Peggy's help. Nan will confirm the location once the room is booked.
2) Wednesday, March 24 from 4:30 - 6 at Catalano Conference Center (Ruth's house: 5128 N. 81st Dr, Glendale, AZ 85303) will be the K12 Online Lan Party with the presenter available via Skype. A poll/survey needs to be done to find out which session we will be using.

VII. Board News and Conference Updates (Tucson): Coy Ison
a. http://www.aztea.org/content/aztea-innovation-awards-2009

VIII. WOW Planning: Ruth Catalano, Chair

a. Ruth has initiated a poll "WOW Planning Meeting #1" on Doodle: http://doodle.com/hn32hs3yccwyc4yz Please go to the poll and indicate your availability for the first WOW Planning Meeting if you are interested in being part of the committee. Doodle_ WOW pLanning meeting #1.pdf
b. WOW Action Items jan 2010.pdf
c. Sample WOW schedule.xls

Ruth discussed the results from her Doodle poll. She will be following up with an email to finalize the meeting date. Ruth asked for input about the philosphy/planning for WOW this year. The discussion involved taking into account the many factors that may lead to a reduced attendance at WOW. Last year 19 rooms for each of four 50 minute sessions, this year's proposal is to have 3 sessions of 10: two 50 minute sessions and one of approximately 2 hours. This choice is in response to presenters from last year who complained about not having enough participants. The general consensus was that this was a good idea. Proposals will not be solicited but invitations will be sent. If proposals are submitted, they will be considered. Ann is to check on the contract with Kevin Honeycutt to make sure a 2 hour session will be acceptable. Peggy mentioned also having the shorter session of "conversation with the keynote speaker". Peggy will "host" Kevin.

Ruth will proceed with the request for 10 rooms and select labs to be used for the sessions. She also discussed the action items for volunteers spreadsheets. "Volunteer or be drafted" was the call.

Nan and Ruben seconded the motion.
